Landscape/Construction Foreman

With nearly 30 years in the business, RareField Design/Build (formerly Paxton Gate Design/Build) has a portfolio of beautiful work, and plenty more on the boards. We are looking to find a belts-on Lead or Foreman who answers “yes” to the the questions above. In your role at RareField, you will manage and work side-by-side with a small team while producing high quality, carpentry-heavy gardens. You’ll experience the pride of overseeing the construction of projects that dramatically transform spaces and clients’ lives, all while we endeavor to change the stereotypes associated with the construction industry. Position requirements below:

  • Required: 7+ years of relevant, professional carpentry and garden experience.
  • Required: Ability to lead a team, mobilize subs and create punch lists and schedules to effectively run a project.
  • Required: Exterior/Interior Framing through finish Carpentry Skills, especially regarding Decks, Fences, other Outdoor Structures, Windows, and Doors.
  • Required: A positive attitude and respect for the collaborative nature of the work.
  • Required: A truck or van capable of hauling lumber and materials. (We typically use delivery services but reimburse for mileage when an employee vehicle is used).

Extras:

  • Experience with stone walls, stone patios and other masonry
  • Experience installing modern drip irrigation, sweating copper, and landscape lighting.
  • Experience with proper soil preparation and planting, as well as familiarity with locally appropriate plant-stock.

Fine Gardener with Lead Potential

Are you a passionate horticulture professional looking for the next step in your career? RareField Design/Build (formerly Paxton Gate Design/Build), a well-positioned and growing company based in San Francisco’s Mission District is looking for someone to augment our Fine Gardening/Maintenance Department’s capabilities. We have more work than we can currently handle, and even more coming in.

This is a full-time, full benefits, hands-on, professional gardening position with significant autonomy, responsibility, on-the-job training, and growth potential. You will train up with our systems alongside our current department head and with the goal of providing significant drive and leadership yourself as the entire company grows. You will be personally responsible for the maintenance and care of our full roster of Fine Gardening clients, including all horticulture and maintenance tasks, in-fill planting, design opportunities, and more; with the support of our hand-picked team of artisans and designers, as well as opportunities to collaborate with locally and internationally respected firms in the areas of landscape design, landscape architecture, architecture, interior design, hospitality design, and general contracting.

The following qualifications are required:
• 2-5 years of professional experience with a locally respected Landscape and/or Gardening firm.
• Personal hand tools and transportation to jobsite (no hauling required, we have a company truck for that).
• A positive, team-player attitude, and respect for the collaborative nature of the work.

Be sure to mention direct experience with any of the following:
• Most importantly: Professional, organic care of local gardens including everything from general clean up, aesthetic pruning, weeding, fertilizing, pest management, and so on.
• Modern drip irrigation and landscape lighting installation, service, and repair.
• Soil preparation and planting, planting design.
• Customer service.

We have a company truck which under non-COVID conditions could pick you up and provide transportation, but right now you will need to provide your own transportation to the sites.   2. Interior/Exterior Framing through finish Carpentry Skills, especially with regard to Decks, Fences, Windows and Doors.
  3. Experience with Dry-Laid Stone Walls and Patios, especially with regard to the artful cutting and fitting of flagstone for flatwork and selection and fitting of moss rock for retaining.
  4. Experience installing modern drip irrigation and landscape lighting.
  5. Experience with proper soil preparation and planting, as well as familiarity with locally appropriate plant-stock.
  6. A positive, team-player attitude, and respect for the collaborative nature of the work.
  7. An innate drive to learn and improve with a critical, self-reflective approach to one’s work.
  8. Last but not least: Ability to get yourself to and from jobsites in a timely manner
